municipalities

In some countries more than half of all homes are already connected to a fibre-optic network. They are able to make maximum use of the possibilities of optical fibre. Residents are already profiting from numerous innovative services. With data usage growing around the world, and with it an increasing demand for more bandwidth, the Netherlands simply cannot afford to lag behind. More and more municipalities are coming to the conclusion that fibre-optic cable holds a wealth of promise.

What benefits can fibre-optic cable bring to a municipality?

  • Quality of the environment. A fibre-optic network enhances the quality of society and improves the living environment.
  • Economic growth. The presence of super fast internet increases a municipality´s attractiveness as a location for companies, residents and institutions.
  • Sustainable. Fibre-optic networks have very low energy loss; optical networks emit up to 85% less CO2 into the atmosphere than traditional copper networks.
  • Stronger social contacts. Fibre-optic networks stimulate the development of social contacts and increase social cohesion in the municipality.
  • Social benefit. New applications that are provided over optical fibre enable cost savings to be realised in the fields of transport, health care, education and other social services.

Installing the fibre-optic network.

A fibre-optic network can be realised in a municipality in a variety of ways. Three issues drive this choice:

  • Basis of support amongst residents. Residents must actively support the construction of the network and be willing to use it.
  • An active operator. Reggefiber installs the network. Then a party is needed that will actively use this network, by offering services in the municipality via its service providers.
  • Basis of support at municipality level. For example, the availability of a smooth licensing procedure.

Only in this way is it possible to make the network viable. In many municipalities, the construction of a fibre-optic network is seen as a key objective. Where that is not yet the case, the provision of fibre optics is often propagated by initiatives from enthusiastic residents. Experience shows that with the aid of a sophisticated local public awareness programme carried out in close cooperation with the municipality, initial concerns and questions about optical fibre quickly make way for enthusiasm and support for construction of the network.
